PONTEFRACT'S 2007 race season began with a mammoth eight-race programme on Tuesday (writes Graham Orange).
A bumper Easter crowd of 6,500 enjoyed plenty of action on the track played out to a backdrop of the racecourse bathed in sunshine, especially towards the end of the afternoon.
It was Middleham trainer Mark Johnston, fresh from being crowned Britain's champion trainer on the all-weather tracks over the winter, who posted the first winner of the new campaign, courtesy of Salassa (8-11 favourite) in the opening race - a contest for maiden three-year-olds.
