WORK to construct a new fish pass on the River Aire at Castleford started this week.
The pass, which will be built alongside the new footbridge across the river, will help fish migrate up the River Aire.
The Environment Agency was awarded [pounds sterling]309,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and [pounds sterling]70,000 from community funding body the SITA Trust to build the pass on Castleford weir on the north side of the river.
Darren Starkey, project manager at the Environment Agency, said: "The fish pass will improve biodiversity further up the river, encouraging otters, kingfishers and bittern.
