Article: Arson suspected as centre is evacuated.

THIRTY-THREE people had to be evacuated from a busy leisure centre after a fire broke out last night.

Firefighters believe a pile of leaves and rubbish had been set alight after being pushed against a fire exit at the back of the Mountbatten Leisure Centre in Twyford Avenue, Stamshaw, Portsmouth.

The sports hall and corridors quickly filled with smoke but everyone inside managed to escape unharmed.

Two crews from Copnor fire station and one from Cosham were called to the scene about 6pm.

The twelve firefighters in attendance put out the blaze within a few minutes.

The fire door was completely destroyed and is being replaced.
