The effects of the economic slowdown on ordinary families have been starkly exposed as the number of mortgage possession orders in Birmingham shot up by 64 per cent.

Courts issued 1,186 possession orders over just three months in the city, as banks sought to seize properties from homeowners struggling to pay their bills.
