NEW YORK--"I never meant to be here," insists Diane Von Furstenberg from her rose-tinted Fifth Avenue office overlooking Bergdorf Goodman.

She's back, nonetheless. The entrepreneurial aristocrat, whose printed wraparound jersey dresses were symbols of the Seventies, is returning to wholesale manufacturing beginning 1997.

"I'm doing clothes for me, and for people like me," Von Furstenberg said in a recent interview. "Not that I'm revolutionizing anything. In the fashion business, we keep reinventing the wheel."
