The ability to obtain adequate health care may be hampered by functional illiteracy. Williams and colleagues performed a cross-sectional survey to determine the ability of patients to function in health care situations requiring reading.

An instrument to measure functional health literacy was administered to patients presenting to the emergency department of two large urban hospitals, one in Atlanta and one in Los Angeles.
