CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Charlotte-area civil rights and religious leaders Friday called for residents of all colors and creeds to take responsibility for protecting local churches.
Kelly Alexander Jr., an NAACP leader from Charlotte, urged members of the area's white religious community to join African Americans in creating Neighborhood Church Watch programs to safeguard churches from arson attacks.
The fire at the Matthews Murkland Presbyterian Church late Thursday is the latest in the estimated 30 suspicious fires at African American churches in the South since early last year.
