It is hoped that the recent political concerns over gasoline price increases will cause Republicans to rethink proposals to abolish the Department of Energy (DOE), a senior department official said Monday.
"The fact of the matter is that energy prices do impact consumers of this country and so the sort of perverse benefit of the increase in gasoline prices is to focus on the importance of energy and the importance of affordable energy to Americans -- and the need to take steps to preserve that," Patricia Fry Godley, assistant secretary of fossil energy programs, said in a telephone interview.
