WASHINGTON - The National Association of Chain Drug Stores has asked the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to reconsider a proposal that would require retailers to report how many over-the-counter products containing pseudoephedrine they sell.
The government is concerned that the ingredient, which is found in dozens of nonprescription cold remedies, is being used in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine. The DEA is seeking to make pseudoephedrine a third class of drugs - one sold without a prescription, but kept behind the pharmacy counter.
