Sometimes down the road, after you've left Alpine or Marathon, and you think it's "just around the next turn," keep driving--it's probably still some distance away.
The first thing a visitor notices about Big Bend National Park is that it is a long distance from anywhere. Park headquarters is 70 miles from the nearest town, 100 miles from a hospital or bank, 125 miles from an interstate highway and 230 miles from the nearest airport. Roads leading to the park end at the Rio Grande, which forms the border between the remote Texas park and the Mexican states of Coahuila and Chihuahua.
