The board of Exxaro Resources has approved a ZAR 9 billion (USd1.1bn) capital expenditure to expand the Grootegeluk coalmine and plant to meet the demand for coal from Eskom s new Medupi power station, which is under construction in South Africa s Limpopo province.
Exxaro has concluded the coal supply agreement for the first three 800 MW power units of the 6 unit Medupi and is finalizing the agreement on the second three 800 MW units. Most of Exxaro s ZAR 9 billion(USD1.1bn) investment will be allocated to the Grootegeluk coal plant.
