On Sunday, July 27, Syracuse Chiefs pitcher Scott Richmond was preparing to start that afternoon's game against the Indianapolis Indians.
It would be Richmond's last start for the Chiefs for a while as, the next day, the 28-year-old Vancouver native was scheduled to fly to Toronto to join the rest of the Canadian National baseball team in advance of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Then, about 30 minutes before game time, Syracuse manager Doug Davis sent pitching coach Rick Langford to get Richmond out of the trainer's room.
"They called me in and said I wasn't going to pitch that day," Richmond recalled.
