Introduction
Each year Americans are exposed to hazardous substances through unintended releases. Unfortunately, very little has been known about the magnitude of these releases and their public health consequences. In 1990, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) started an active state-based Hazardous Substances Emergency Events Surveillance (HSEES) system. This epidemiologic surveillance system currently tracks hazardous substances releases in fourteen states and assists state health officials in evaluating both the nature and extent of hazardous spills in their respective jurisdictions.
