General Motors has never been a corporation that thinks small. From its earliest days, it had a long, long list of products and ancillary operations. The Brobdingnagian dreams of its founder indicated that GM was destined to grow and grow.
Buick was the nucleus of General Motors Co., which was formed by William Crapo Durant in 1908. Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Oakland (now Pontiac) were early members, as were such forgettable car names as Ewing, Marquette, Welch, Scripps-Booth, Sheridan and Elmore, together with Rapid and Reliance trucks.
Chevrolet? It was born in 1911, and it didn't become part of GM until 1918. Chevrolet was another Billy Durant project.
