As it approaches its 100th anniversary, Oldsmobile is trying to claw its way back from a sales disaster that has lasted for nine years.
In 1986, Oldsmobile was on top of the world. It sold 1,059,390 cars, the fourth consecutive year in which sales had topped 1 million. It was the only American make other than Chevrolet and Ford ever to reach that pinnacle.
Then the gold turned to brass. In 1993, car and truck sales totaled 402,936, a decline of 62 percent from the glory days of 1986, when only cars were sold. Car-truck deliveries moved up to 448,945 in 1994 but tumbled to 387,545 last year.
