NASA budget cuts that have passed through the House would devastate NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) program, said Bill Townsend, MTPE's deputy director.
In passing H.R. 3322 last week, the House authorized $13.5 billion for NASA's FY '97 budget, $308.6 million less than NASA requested. The MTPE program received the highest budget cut of all the programs at $373 million.
The House Appropriations Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development-Independent Agencies Subcommittee also marked up the NASA appropriations bill, which included a $220 million budget cut for the MTPE program.
