MANHATTAN -- An outbreak of listeria in deli meats which has left at least 12 dead and dozens ill in Canada is a reminder for pregnant women and other immunocompromised individuals to avoid certain foods.
"My wife is six months pregnant and she hasn't had deli meats or smoked salmon or other refrigerated, ready-to-eat foods for over six months," said Doug Powell, an associate professor of food safety at Kansas State University.
