Estate agencies Rightmove and haart have blamed the government's dithering over a potential Stamp Duty suspension for a fall in house prices.

Rightmove says its August figures reveal average asking prices in London fell 5.3%, a drop of #21,000, after rising 0.3% in July. Across the UK, new vendors are putting their properties on the market for 2.3% less than in July.

Rightmove says the decline is the largest fall measured by its August house price index. The news comes on the back of falls of 1.2% and 1.8% across the UK in June and July respectively.
