Rats are escaping from underground pipes onto one of Preston's main shopping streets while workmen carry out emergency repairs, it emerged today.
Traders and landlords have reported seeing full-grown rodents on Friargate since work started there on Friday.
One man even mistook one of the black rodents for a cat.
Workmen have been digging a section of the road outside the Greyfriar pub after a routine inspection found damage to the road surface.
They worked through the weekend in an attempt to keep disruption to a minimum.
But once the work stops each night, traders have reported seeing a number of rats scuttling across the street.
