WITH 54,000 staff worldwide in more than 4,000 stores and generating annual turnover of pounds 5bn, the retail conglomerate Baugur knows a thing or two about what makes the high street tick.
After a decade of near-constant expansion, the Iceland-based group owns or holds stakes in a number of well known chains in the UK, ranging from Goldsmiths and Hamleys to Whistles and French Connection.
It can claim some notable successes, such as Deeside based Iceland where sales are roaring ahead, while others such as MK One have gone to the wall.
