NOWHERE are bestseller lists compiled on oath, although in some places the rules of this approximate science are more stringent than elsewhere. In Latin America, Veja, a widely read Brazilian magazine, publishes a weekly list. In Mexico, nobody puts out a similarly respected list, so our correspondent in Mexico city constructed a listing based on inquiries at two of the capital's leading bookshops. The two Mexican lists are offered here with a consumer warning to all that they should be taken as broad indicators of reading trends, not strict or conventional bestseller rankings.
