It may take up to a year for about 200 Marine Corps and Navy CH/MH-53E helicopters to return to full operational service, according to Marine Corps and industry officials.
"A year is a very, very pessimistic estimate, but we have to determine the magnitude" of the problem first, one Marine official told Defense Daily yesterday. He added that military and industry specialists are inspecting the entire fleet to determine the extent of the problem.
The helicopters were grounded Wednesday as a precautionary measure after investigators suspected that bearings in the helicopter's main rotor assembly likely failed, causing a May 9 CH-53E crash that killed four.
