PHILADELPHIA--Jun. 17--We have seen the rowhouse of the future, and it's sideways.

The long wall goes along the street, at twice the average frontage, while the short side is the party wall. There's more light in the houses, bigger yards, and garages between pairs of houses with roof decks above.

This, at least, is the vision presented by the first-place design in the Francisville Design Competition, organized by the Foundation for Architecture, and judged earlier this week.
