People from across the political divide have expressed shock and sadness at the death of defence secretary January Masilela in a car crash in Mpumalanga.
These include Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota.
Lekota and a delegation from his department visited Masilela's family on Monday.
Presidency spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said the executive was all greatly saddened by Masilela's sudden death.
President Thabo Mbeki appointed Masilela in 1999 and he became one of the country's longest standing directors-generals.
"We extend our condolences to all his family and close friends," Ratshitanga said.
