Introduction
Few institutions in the world have, as a matter of tradition, prized interdisciplinary research so greatly, or carried it out so effectively as marine and aquatic laboratories (National Association of Marine Laboratories, 1995). One of the tenets of aquatic field research has been that interdisciplinary approaches are the methods of choice, if not necessity. This has not, of course, meant that more focused research has suffered as a result - quite to the contrary. Marine organisms have been exploited as model systems for pioneering studies of cellular immunity, fertilization, development, nerve action, memory and circadian rhythms, to name a few areas. ...
