As consumers look to cut back on spending, the cheese industry is making even its basic items more affordable, according to Private Label. Both premium and economy brands are pushing their processed cheese in shredded and deli sliced forms. Currently store brands hold both a monopoly on processed shredded cheese with $8.2 million in sales, a 45.6% increase from the previous year. Private labels in the sector account for 96.6% of all sales. Cheese prices rose over the past year, the average price per pound of $4.48, up from $3.98 a year ago, according to NIELSEN HOMESCAN CONSUMER FACTS.
