FARM & COUNTRY: Export wool a mistake.(Features)

A WELSH sheep farmer has pleaded with wool producers to shun export buyers in favour of the British Wool Marketing Board.

Dilwyn John, who runs a flock of South Wales Mountain sheep near Merthyr Tydfil, said farmers who sell direct to exporters are on the road to ruin.

He said he is speaking from bitter experience - he sold his wool overseas for three years.

"The exporters are doing nothing more than picking and choosing which wool they want to buy," he said.

"They've no concern for the long-term future of sheep farmers or the wool they produce and will do a tremendous amount of damage to our wool industry."
