A dispute over music licensing cost Lynn Anderson, owner of the Charcoal House Restaurant in La Mesa, $20,000. Club Tremors in Pacific Beach recently settled a similar case costing thousands of dollars.
In both cases, there was disagreement over payment of fees to play copyrighted music at the establishments.
A groundswell of complaints about music copyright fees nationwide has prompted an avalanche of state and federal legislation to revamp music licensing laws.
Twenty-three states, including California, have introduced music licensing reforms in the last 18 months. Twelve states have passed new laws.
