Residential users greet phone number-revealing technology with distrust

If Californians follow the rest of the nation, a new telephone service should be popular with businesses but less liked by residential customers.

Beginning June 1, Californians will be able to view the telephone number of incoming calls and have their numbers revealed. Customers can also opt to have their numbers blocked from view.

The call identification service, called Caller ID by Pacific Bell, is already available in the other 49 states.

While it has not caught on with residential customers, businesses seem to have found the service much more useful.
