The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern began operating the 203-mile Colony Line on May 4, just days after the Surface Transportation Board approved DM&E's acquisition of the line from Union Pacific. The Colony Line connects with DM&E at Rapid City, S.D., and extends north to Bentonite, near Colony, Wyo., and south to Crawford and Chadron, Neb., where it connects with Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Nebkota Railway. The acquisition brings DM&E to 1,120 route miles.
