A TOUGH new law to protect our life-saving crews from thugs will be introduced in a matter of months, it was revealed today.
The Government has backed proposals for the law which will make attacking an emergency service worker an arrestable offence - carrying a six- month prison sentence - bringing punishment for attacks on emergency and other public service workers in line with those against police officers.
It marks victory for the Sunderland Echo's Protect Our Heroes campaign, launched in December 2001 calling for tighter measures to end the stonings, stabbings and shootings as well as the verbal abuse that our 999 crews endure.
