POLICE are to probe claims that city councillors are being forced to hand over tax payers' expenses cash to help pay Labour party debts.
Opposition MPs and campaigners have also called on council watchdogs to investigate, claiming public money was being "systematically abused".
The row exploded nationally when city councillor Bryn Sidaway quit the party after he refused to pay a three per cent levy on his [pounds sterling]7,106 annual allowance, a sum of [pounds sterling]215, under the rule changes.
He reported the matter to police, who today confirmed they are investigating the claims.
