AFTER 60 years, a top male soloist has been reunited with the man who changed his life - his old music teacher.

As a 12-year-old boy, Rupert Hanson's world changed for ever when teacher Harry White brought in a gramophone and played a piece of classical music for his pupils.

Those few minutes, as a performance of Nimrod by Elgar reverberated around the classroom of James Williams Street School, have always stayed with Mr Hanson, now 71.

Inspired by his teacher, he made a bid to escape from his life in the back streets and tenements of Sunderland's East End.
