SHORE fishing has definitely hit rock bottom with more anglers than sizeable fish about at present.
The few decent codling in the Wear area are mainly coming after dark. Whiting - mostly undersized - and coalies are the mainstay from the piers and more flounders are showing in the river and the estuary.
There are times when baits are retrieved in the same condition as they were put into the water, showing that even the crabs are in short supply. Roker Pier is like a graveyard in daylight with silence from the punters and very little action from the fish.
