Books on migration, like migrants themselves, tend to come in waves. Since the end of World War II, two main waves of international migration in Europe, and of accompanying literature, can be identified. These two waves can be clearly differentiated as regards their timing, their geography, and their specific causes and consequences. The first wave started soon after the war, gathered pace through the 1950s, reached its apogee during the 1960s, and faded in the 1970s, especially after the oil crisis of 1973/4.
