Thieves easily unblock stolen cellphones as handset security remains a challenge.(News)

Having your stolen cellphone blacklisted doesn't make it useless to criminals. In fact, after scanning your cellphone for important information such as banking details, criminals can easily unblock any blacklisted cellphone by having its International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number altered for around R100.

Thousands of cellphones are stolen across the country every week, and the numbers are steadily increasing as it becomes easier to have a stolen cellphone unblocked.
