Q. What's a mountain bike?
A. Invented in California 20 years ago, it's a bicycle designed to ride off paved roads. (Many people prefer the term all-terrain bike.) It has a smaller, beefier frame than a road bike, flat handlebars and knobby tires up to two inches wide for traversing soft ground. Racing models have 24 gears (compared to 16 on road bikes) and are geared lower to climb unpaved hills and plow through sand and mud. Most cross-country bikes have a shock-absorbing front suspension; downhill racing bikes and some cross-country models also have rear suspension.
