Once upon a time there wasn't much margin in fruit and veg for the big supermarkets. But something changed. Was it the lack of competition arising from the declining number of greengrocers? Or the increased interest in more varieties and more exotic fruit? Or was it the fact supermarkets have chosen to even out prices during the year, negating the effects of seasonality but avoiding sharp rises in the winter?

Whatever the answer, it's now frequently the case that, provided I shop seasonally, I can buy fruit and veg more cheaply in my local greengrocer, or even a farmers' market, than in a supermarket. (We'll leave the fact it's often better quality for another time.)
