WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Jun. 27--At first glance, Scott Valley Bank's new branch here seems a long way from home. After all, the community bank's Yreka headquarters are 300 miles away from Contra Costa County.

Yet this Siskiyou County-based bank has deeper roots in the Interstate-680 business community than most of its competitors. That's because Scott Valley is a surviving relative of the Bank of Contra Costa -- a bellwether of the I-680 corridor's explosive growth during the 1980s.
