PLAYWRIGHT Sir Alan Ayck-bourn will step down as artistic director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre next year.
The announcement was made following a meeting of the SJT board.
Chairman of the board Sue Truefitt said: "In the last couple of years, Sir Alan's day-to-day involvement in the running of the theatre has decreased but his directing work has continued as normal."
A new artistic director will be appointed next summer to plan the theatre's 2009/10 season, although Sir Alan will continue to direct revivals of his plays as well as premiering any of his new work.
