A charge of assault was heard at the North Riding Police court on Monday then Charles Russell Coates, draper, was charged with having assaulted the nine-year-old daughter of Mark William Cooper, carrier, of Hackness.
Mr Russell Richardson appeared to prosecute, and Mr J Whitfield defended.
Mr Richardson stated that the child lived in a little cottage on the Langdale End side of the village of Hackness. The girl attended school at Hackness, and on the 18th inst, was returning from school at about four o'clock, and was going out from the village at the far end, when she met prisoner.
