Health secretary Patricia Hewitt could throw a last-ditch lifeline to the fight to save hospital beds in Sudbury after a dramatic U-turn by councillors.
But campaigners may face a tense wait of several months before they get a decision.
Suffolk county councillors this week asked the Government to intervene over plans to close all inpatient beds at Walnuttree Hospital.
The move comes five months after a previous decision to back the closure proposals.
It was greeted with delight by people fighting to force Suffolk West Primary Care Trust to carry on providing intermediate care beds in the town.
