London: city of summer pavilions. As the 2008 Serpentine Pavilion nears completion ...(GEHRY BUILDS A PAVILION)

Conceived as a simple wooden box that creates a street that runs from park to gallery, the eight completed Serpentine Pavilion brings to Frank Gehry his first realised project in England. Suspended in typical Gehry fashion, a series of glass canopies give shelter to what is described more as an amphitheatre than a traditional enclosed pavilion. Designed in collaboration with Arup, the supersized timber clad steel structure seems to lack something of the billowing lightness that has made the architect famous around the world, however, until the structure is fully unveiled such criticism may be premature.
