RESIDENTS were forced to shut their windows in a heatwave against a disgusting mystery smell settling over Spalding.
In one of the hottest weeks of the year residents from the Wygate area, across West Elloe Avenue to Fulney had to barricade themselves in during the evenings against the sickly smell which it has been suggested could be turkey manure or sewage.
But others believe it is more chemical in nature.
Percival DeMontfort-Chuter, who lives in the Roman Bank area, said: "There was an acrid, toxic smell over the north of the town.
"I had to rush around and close all the windows, but by the time I got them all closed it was too late. ...
