Teachers must take the emotional well-being of their pupils seriously.
So says Dr Pieter de Villiers, an expert in the study of child behaviour.
De Villiers was speaking at the faculty of education at the University of Pretoria's Groenkloof campus. He said teachers had an important role to play in helping children cope in an unreliable world. Young people had lost a sense of value within society and were not seen as individuals.
Violence in South Africa's schools was escalating at an alarming rate.
