A high-ranking Durban police officer was shot and killed during an exchange of fire with gunmen in KwaMashu last night.
The senior superintendent, who was 43, was shot once in the head with a high-calibre assault rifle.
It is thought that the officer, who was not named, was part of a task team conducting an operation in the township's K Section when they saw a parked black VW Polo.
Supt Jay Naicker said it was not clear what prompted the policemen to approach the car.
