SMOKERS are completely oblivious to the number of poisons they are putting in their body, a study has shown.

Cigarette smoke contains some 4,000 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer, but three quarters of people in the north east were only able to name nicotine and tar, which are listed on packets.

Even when given a list of poisons to choose from, two in five people were unable to identify a single one.

A campaign has now been launched by Cancer Research UK, which carried out the survey, to make people aware of the dangers.
