CHILDREN living near the second Tyne Tunnel in Jarrow could suffer permanent lung damage, green campaigners claimed today.
Environmental group the Tyne Crossings Alliance has called for a halt to the [pounds sterling]185m new Tyne crossing between Jarrow and East Howdon.
The Alliance say research by the University of Southern California links motorway pollution with irreparable lung damage and reduced life expectancy.
Hebburn-based Tyne Crossing Alliance spokesman Paul Winch said: "The recent increase in awareness of climate change has placed the issue of transport emissions on the national agenda.
