IT'S official - the Port of Tyne is the best in Europe.
The news came as the port revealed its growing significance to the
economic health of the whole region.
The South Shields-based trust port has contributed [pounds sterling]80m to the region's economy over the last decade, with an additional [pounds sterling]21m committed for 2007.
It was announced today at Baltic, Gateshead, that the port has won the prestigious European Port of the Year Award.
The accolade, from the Institute of Transport Management, reflects the growing economic role played by the port.
