BILLIONAIRE Mike Ashley has tightened his grip on control of Newcastle United, according to sources.
Mr Ashley shocked Newcastle last week by buying Sir John Hall's 41.6 per cent stake in the club.
Now it is understood he has purchased or been pledged 54 per cent of shares.
If confirmed, it means the reclusive businessman effectively runs the club.
Newcastle United officials are expected to meet with Mr Ashley today or tomorrow - possibly at St James's Park - with his position believed to have been strengthened considerably by the guarantee of the sale of further shareholdings to the company formed to purchase the club.
